Beauty Pageants date back to 1921. This year saw the grand introductions of beauty pageants as we know today. The first pageant was held in Atlantic City, called the National Beauty Tournament. However, 1921 also saw the very first Miss America Pageant. This pageant was nothing like today’s pageant, with representatives from every state. In fact, the first Miss America Pageant only had eight contestants and was won by a 16 year old, Washington, D.C. resident named Margaret Gorman.

In 1922 and 1923, a first and last occurred in Miss America history, the same girl, Mary Campbell won the title twice, in two years. This prompted organizers to create a rule that said that any winner can only hold one title and never qualify for the title again.

The late twenties and early thirties were without Miss America Pageants, thanks to the press and the Depression. When it did come back, they included evening gowns in the competitions. Then in later years of the thirties, a talent competition was added as an optional event for the women in the beauty pageant. In 1938, it then becomes a category that was required.

In the world of beauty pageants, it was soon clear that Miss America was very popular and then the birth of Miss Universe, Miss World, Junior Miss, and Miss USA Beauty Pageants occurred in the 50′s. The 50′s also saw the first live televised Miss America Beauty Pageant

The sixties were filled with first as well, in the start of the decade, Miss USA crowned the first black woman in history, Corrine Huff. The sixties also gave birth to Little Miss Universe, Little Miss America, and Miss Teenage America pageants. What the world didn’t know then, was that in 1962 the newly crowned America’s Junior Miss, Diane Sawyer, would one day become one of the most influential journalists in the world.

Throughout the years, beauty pageants continue to be a scene of immediate success in every generation, young and old, and they seem to be the one goal that every little girl dreams of. They all dream of hearing the ever popular There She Is song, while she is being crowned one of the new pageant winners.

The Tarnished Crown

However, beauty pageants have not been with incidents, deceit, and tarnished reputations. For example, in 1937, just after being crowned, Bette Cooper decided she just wanted to go home and left, which caused an extensive search and struggle for pageant officials. In 1957, Leona Gage, Miss USA was ripped of her crown after her husbands mother disclosed that she was the mother of two children and married.

In 1973, Miss World and the first American to hold the crown, lost her crown and title, thanks to rumors floating around about numerous affairs. In 1984, Vanessa Williams, the first black woman to win the title of Miss America, resigned from her title and crown because she had posed for nude photographs in the popular adult magazine Penthouse. On about the same note in 2006, Miss Great Britain, loses her title and crown after she was found to have relations with member of the judging panel, as well as posing in nude photographs for the adult magazine Playboy.

The Miss America Beauty Pageant has had 87 winners from a variety of states, Miss USA has had 10 winners, one of which went on to win Miss Universe, and 23 Miss Teen USA winners, since the beauty pageants began. A fascinating Miss Teen USA fact is that eight states have yet to have any girls place as a finalist in the beauty pageant.

As long as women have a fascination with beauty, beauty pageants will continue to be as popular as they have always been. Married or unmarried women, teens, pre-teens, and even toddlers enter beauty pageants today, all over the world. There is always a pageant. In the south, there are schools that hold their own beauty pageants such as Little Miss Fourth District for a elementary school in Georgia, or Little Miss Tree Festival, there is no age limit in beauty pageants today.

People with oily skin find that their skin produces more oil in a variety of conditions, both internally and externally.

Internally, medications, stress, and hormones can trigger the oil glands to overproduce and cause breakouts while external factors that trigger this reaction include: certain foods (usually those high in fat), humidity, and overly hot temperatures (whether inside or outside).

Aside from skin care techniques, people with oily skin can watch for these factors and compensate for them in order to help keep their oil glands stable.

It is important to understand that, in the case of oily skin, Mom is not always right. Old skin care methods taught us to use rather harsh cleansers, exfoliating treatments, masks, and toners. These were developed to strip the skin of its natural oils.

Exfoliating treatments designed for oily skin both scrubbed a light layer of dead cells from the skin and stripped oils from the skin. The oil stripping action of the cleansers, masks, and toners combined with the abrasiveness of exfoliating treatments designed for oily skin managed to create irritated, dry skin. Dry skin, in turn, begins to produce more oil in an attempt to compensate for the lack of moisture.

A modern treatment that many women seem to prefer is the use of fruit acids. These tend to soften and brighten complexions at the same time that they help the skin control its oil production. This stabilized oil control helps makeup stay smoother, giving an overall pleasant appearance.

Fruit acids also have an outstanding effect on moisture within your skin because they encourage the production of a chemical within the skin. This chemical gives the skin the ability to hold water within it at a greater ratio than skin which lacks in the chemical. While Moms treatment removed moisture from the skin, the use of fruit acids helps the skin to regulate and retain natural moisture.

Fruit acids work as a light chemical exfoliation by removing dead skin and old oil which build up in the uppermost layer of your skin. These old oils on the surface are excess oils and not being utilized by the inner workings of your skin, so removing them does not affect your skins moisture content.

The skin is stimulated by this removal and produces new cells, which are necessary to have that fresh complexion. Large pores appear smaller with the use of fruit acids because the acids break down oils and dirt built up within the pores. Some people believe that the pores actually shrink, but science disagrees with this.

The most likely explanation is that the pores appear smaller because they are no longer full of the dark material; therefore they are not as obvious to the naked eye. If there is any truth to pore shrinkage, researchers agree that it can only happen through a long time of keeping the pores free of any build up.

You often hear of alpha hydroxy acids, some of these are natural and some are chemical compositions which are an attempt to recreate natural substances. Either way, you can use them yourself without purchasing mass created skin care treatments which may carry unwanted chemicals to your skin.

Dip a cotton ball in the juice of a fresh, organic lemon and apply to your face (especially oily areas and areas with larger pores), let sit for 3 minutes, cleanse with a mild organic cleanser, and moisturize with an appropriate moisturizer.

This should be done daily and the amount of time the lemon juice remains on the face should not be increased as a general rule. By using the juice daily, the build up break down will be gradual, but you will keep future build up under control.

Many people want to hurry the process of the initial build up removal, but if you irritate your skin by leaving the lemon juice on too long, you will not be able to use the juice on a daily basis. This defeats the plan of keeping future build up under control.

Remember that your oily skin may be irritating to you, but proper care of it will alleviate that. There are great side effects for you because of your oily skin: it usually does not burn as easily, does not usually freckle as quickly, develops fine lines and wrinkles slower, and does not discolor early. Care for your oily skin and it will care for you!

Men and women spend millions each year to turn back the clock and fight the effects of aging on the skin. Using anti aging creams is a great way to help minimize wrinkles. However for some people, this isn’t enough of a change. These people are turning to dermatologists for professional skin resurfacing procedures. There are a few treatments available to help reduce wrinkles. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of each procedure before making a decision.

Chemical peels are done by a dermatologist. Peels strip off the top layers of skin. This procedure is available in different strengths from light to deeper peels. This regenerates the skin and reduces the effects of aging on the skin. The procedure is very effective on the upper lip and forehead areas of the face. It can’t be done on the skin around the eyes, as this skin is very thin and permanent damage could result.

A variety of acids are used in chemical peels to get rid of wrinkles, including trichloroacetic acids, alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxyl acids. The chemical used will depend on the depth of the peel that is desired. The skin will begin to scab and crust over about twenty four hours after the procedure. It will take about two weeks for the redness to heal after the crusting stage. There are some potential side effects from this procedure, such as infection, numbness and scarring.

Dermabrasion has a similar effect as chemical peels, but chemicals are not used. This procedure involves deep exfoliation of the surface of the skin. As in chemical peels, there are different strengths. Microdermabrasion is a gentler method that produces results similar to chemical peels. This is best for removing lighter wrinkles and lines. To remove deep wrinkles, a stronger dermabrasion procedure is needed.

This procedure is done with a rotating brush that removes the top layers of the surface of the skin. It is very effective for removing wrinkles. The lower skin layers are exposed and will crust over and heal as in a chemical peel. The skin will need to heal for a few weeks after the procedure. After healing you should use a good anti aging cream to prevent new wrinkles from forming.

Laser resurfacing is a relatively new procedure for removing wrinkles. The procedure involves using a laser pulse which penetrates the skin. This vaporizes the water and removes the upper layer of skin cells. New skin is able to grow and is healthy and younger looking. Another benefit of this procedure is its effect on the collagen fibers of the skin. It shortens the fibers and restores elasticity to the skin.

The type of laser used will depend on your skin type, color and condition of the skin. Lasers range from gentle to more powerful. In some cases, more than one laser is used on the same patient, depending on the anti aging needs. The recovery is generally less painful than chemical peels, but you will have redness and some irritation. The amount of irritation will depend on the laser used in the procedure. Continue to use a moisturizer during healing and use anti aging cream after the skin is healed to prevent new wrinkles.

Whatever procedure you choose, be sure to continue with good skin care to prevent your wrinkles from returning and new ones forming. Invest in a good anti aging cream to help keep your skin looking young and healthy. Choose a cream that is good for your skin type and the areas that need attention. Reading reviews of anti aging creams can help you select the right product.

Called the “Ski Town of the Southwest”, Red River Ski Resort lies on Black Mountain, rising directly above the town of Red River, New Mexico. The historical town of Red River itself has an altitude of 8,750 feet, while Black Mountain has an altitude of 10,350 feet and a vertical drop of 1,601 feet. The resort offers six chair lifts and one surface lift, with 58 trails divided equally on 290 acres of skiable areas for skiers and snowboarders, with 32% beginners, 38% intermediates, and 30% experts. With an annual snowfall of 252 inches, the snow is 85% man made. With a ski school, group and private lessons available, even if you’ve never skied before, you will quickly be on the slopes after your first lessons. There are even lessons for snowboarders, who are welcome on the Red River slopes. You can rent all of your ski and snowboarding equipment for very reasonable rates.

Red River caters to families and children, with both children and their parents enjoying a separate, full-service facility on the slopes. The children’s programs offer ski, snowboard, and snow blade lessons. Both full and half-day programs come with an optional lunch. The ski and snowboard schools offer these lessons for all ages and levels, with a fun-loving staff of certified instructors. Special clinics are available upon request. Child care programs are available, provided by an attentive staff which provides for child care, lunch, and play for children ages 4-months to 4-years of age. Both full-day and half-day child care programs are available. For children who are over 4-years of age, the Youth Ski Center is offered to provide ski and snowboard lessons.

Many activates make Red River stand out from the rest of the ski resorts. Their history is very much alive and part of everyday life, not shoved away in a museum to gather dust. On Wednesday, a free program offers guests a free Wednesday night if they have already checked in Sunday or Monday. In addition, guests who purchase any Red River Ski Area 3-day lift ticket can get equipment rental or lessons, receiving the 4th day free of the same item. But most of all, good ol’ mountain fun is a primary activity here, with old-fashioned western traditions bringing visitors and their families back year after year. An annual party, “The Mardi Gras of the Mountains”, is part of the western tradition for everyone – enjoying a mouth watering Texas-sized steak, cooked to how you like it, and then some fancy two steppin’ with your honey to some good music. What more could you ask for?

Red River Ski Resort also has several excellent places to eat, in addition to excellent night life. Some places of interest are the Motherlode Saloon or the Bull -O- Woods Bar, Texas Red’s Steakhouse, the Chalet Cafeteria, and Capo’s Italian Restaurant. Of course, if you want to eat on the slope area – choose the Ski Tip Restaurant located at 10,350 feet up, serving lunch, beer and wine, with wonderful scenic views. The Lift House Bar, at the base of the main lift, is open for lunch and spirits, an “apres ski libation”. Going out on the town is great in Red River. After a day on the slopes, sometimes people wants to just kick back and relax at the lodge, or visit one of the taverns in the area. For the younger crowd, there is a great game room located right in the center of the town. One of the great things about Red River is that everything is within walking distance of the lodging areas, and shuttles are provided for transportation to and from the slopes.

Whenever one of my friends returns from some time away, I ask: “Was it a vacation, or was it just a trip?”

When traveling with kids, true vacations are pretty hard to come by. With the packing, the car seats, the change in sleeping schedules, and all the inevitable whining that comes along, it would be way easier to stay home (especially when traveling by car.)

And yet traveling is important. When we travel, we open to a world that was previously unknown to us. We touch other cultures and other ways of life; we broaden our own perspectives and understand, finally, that our small problems are just that.

When we travel with kids, we open their eyes to all of this and more. Even when we take a simple trip to visit distant relatives, we show them a world of love that they may not had known existed.

Here are eighteen tips to help you enjoy road trip traveling with your kids.

Before the trip:

1. Use online trip planning websites to locate kid friendly parks, historic monuments, and other attractions in advance. Plan at least one child oriented activity each day, even on those driving days. Involving your kids in the planning of your vacation will help them to get excited about the trip, too.

2. When you are doing your research and booking your destination, consider an all inclusive resort. These types of arrangements (in which your lodging, dining, attractions, and activities are included) can really help you relax and enjoy your precious vacation time.

3. Have each child pack their own small backpack with the books, workbooks, and activities that they most want to bring.

4. Have a kid friendly travel map on hand, as well as a pair of binoculars.

5. Consider buying or borrowing a portable DVD player. We only get ours out on long trips, but it has been really helpful, especially if you are traveling very long distances.

6. Get each child a special book of games, puzzles, or simple coloring books, just for the drive, along with some washable markers.

7. Bring some music that everyone will enjoy singing along to. We love our CD of old campfire songs. You can even create your own CDs of family favorites.

8. Bring a Frisbee or a football for when you stop at a park. You want to help your kids burn some energy in a reasonable amount of time.

9. Pack healthy snacks, such as nuts, trail mix, apples, energy bars, and bottled water. A package of baby wipes often comes in handy for little messes in the car, too.

10. Pack a journal and a disposable camera for each child, so that they can document the trip in their own way. These items can be gift wrapped and given to the kids as you need a diversion from boredom or sibling arguments.

11. Make sure to talk about your vacation like it is the ultimate adventure. The enthusiasm that you bring to the prospect of piling into the car will help in untold ways.

In the Car:

12. If you can, do as much traveling as possible while your kids are sleeping. Of course, safety is paramount. If you find yourself getting at all sleepy, pull over and switch with your spouse or find a hotel.

13. If you do not like to drive at night, or you are driving through countryside that you would like your children to see in the daylight, make sure you leave plenty of travel time. Plan on a maximum of seven hours of driving per day. Get up early, drive a bit, and then check into your hotel in the mid afternoon and enjoy the swimming pool. Have a nice, relaxed dinner and leisurely check out some local sites in the evening.

14. While driving during the day, plan to stop at least every hour and a half. Stretch, take some bathroom breaks, and remember that getting there is half the adventure.

15. Finger knitting really helps my kids to pass the time. All you need is a ball of yarn. There is no mess and you can find simple instructions online by doing a Google search for “Finger Knitting.” During our last car trip, we all arrived at our destination with lovely pink finger knitted scarves.

16. During a routine fuel stop, ask each child to choose five or six postcards, which they can send to their friends. Make sure to bring your address book and postage stamps so you can mail them on the way.

17. Allow one child to be the “navigator” each day. The navigator looks at the map and gives recommendations on where to stop for snacks, gas, and meals.

18. Try these simple Travel Games:
The Alphabet Game: Find all the letters of the alphabet, in order, on license plates, billboards, and road signs. Or find objects that begin with each letter.
I Spy: One person spies something in the landscape or in the car and gives clues. (One possible variation on this game is “20 Questions.”)
License Plate “I Spy”: See how many states you can spot.
License Plate Alphabet: Find all the letters of the alphabet, in order, on license plates.
Letter Bingo: Print out Bingo sheets with clip art or words depicting sites you will see on your trip.

Ultimately, it is important to remember that there is no such thing as a perfect family vacation. Prepare as much as possible in advance, and then relax and go with the flow.

Spain is a beautiful and vast country. It is a combination of the tropical, serene, and scenic, beaches and countryside and bustling vibrant cities full of wonderful architecture, history, and exciting flea markets.

Spanish culture is rich, and we the British people love Spain and it has become somewhat of a home from home for us, as it only takes approximately two and a half to three hours to fly from the UK to Spain, which is far less time than it would take to drive from say Newcastle to Cornwall or Devon, which are two of Britain’s favourite holiday destinations at home.

Generally, a holiday in Spain is very cheap, and there are many first-rate resorts, hotels and provinces to stay at, visit and enjoy. A holiday in Spain can make for a brilliant holiday for any person, whether a young couple, old couple, a group of friends, sole traveller, grown up family or a young family. Spain really does offer a great variety of entertainment and activities to keep everybody happy, which is really why it is so popular.

Spain is known to be the party capital of Europe and thousands of Britons are drawn there to party and rave every year. Whilst this has courted much bad publicity due to the minority of reported incidents involving thuggish behaviour by Britons there, this really is an absolute minority and is generally blown out of all proportions by the media, and you are very unlikely to encounter any such troubles statistically, which is worth noting should you be considering such a jaunt.

Car hire in Spain is perhaps one of the most important aspects of holidaying in Spain. For some people, staying at the resort throughout their entire holiday is more than fine, but for others whom may wish to venture further a field and have other ideas, a car will be needed to get you around. Your travel agent, as they will usually have a good knowledge of the local facilities and services, ought to be able to recommend a reputable car hire service which you can utilise in the local area you are going to be holidaying in. It is also important to remember Spain is a very hot country, and a car with air conditioning is going to be essential. Sure, it will cost more, but it will really help to cut down the chances of you suffering from heat stroke and exhaustion if you are able to keep the heat at bay.

The information about travel, safari, travel tips presented here will do one of two things: either it will reinforce what you know about travel, safari, travel tips or it will teach you something new. Both are good outcomes.

Before stepping on that plane for a marvelous safari adventure, plan like there’s no tomorrow. You will thank your self for being precautious when faced with untoward incidents. Here are the important things you should consider when going on a safari travel:

1. Remember that it is one challenging endeavor.
Planning a safari can be one of the most exciting feats one can ever manage to make happen. It is not one of the generic travels, usual jetsetters indulge in. Though you are provided with a tour brochure and a tourist guide, it still is better to research on your own regarding the various itineraries.

2. Best spots for safari should be spotted. The most suggested parts of Africa to enjoy safari include East and Central Africa, Southern Africa and Indian Ocean Islands.

3. Prepare for the climate. It is a must to know the seasonal trends and how they will affect your travel. But also remember that the weather is fickle-minded so you can never really accurately predict the outcome of your travel if you will base it one the weather alone. If you are going to visit East and Central Africa, long rains start early in April to early June. Short rains abound during late November to December. Southern Africa has its rainy season from late November through mid-April for the safari areas. However, during that time, it will be summer in Southern Cape. When one prefers Indian and Ocean Islands he or she can expect the seasonal trend to be more like of that of Southern Africa. In these islands, summer rains last from November through April. Cyclones can also be experienced during those seasons. From May to October, the dry season occurs.

4. Choose your activities. Among others, safari traveling offers these fun-filled activities: a. gorilla trekking b. sailing c. birdwatching d. participatory camping e. self driving

5. Know what you can afford. When choosing a trip, budget constraints should never be overlooked. Decide on a price range that you can work on. To make your budgeting more effective consider the level of luxury of your safari travel, length of your trip, activities, accommodations preferences, meals and season. 6. Determine your travel style. Do you prefer your safari to be more luxurious, moderate or rustic? Will you let kids tag along? Are you traveling with a group or will you be one bold, independent traveler? Will you travel by air or road? What about your guide and your vehicle? Answering those questions will more or less improve your overview of your dream safari travel. Have fun!

This article’s coverage of the information is as complete as it can be today. But you should always leave open the possibility that future research could uncover new facts.

Going on an Australian tour can include anything from wandering the tropical rainforests of northern Australia, to taking in the night life in the capital city of Sydney. Whether your penchant is for lush and untouched scenery or fine wine and entertainment, Australia is sure to have something to offer you.

If you’re interested in treasures of the urban nature, Sydney is home to eclectic architecture, major art galleries, and more than one performing arts theater, as well as several fine dining establishment choices. During your Australian tour of the settled delights be sure to stop by Melbourne, a city known as a trend-setter and home to grand musical extravaganzas, non-stop food and film festivals, and some of the best shopping and nightlife to be found. There are more than 75 different ethnic cuisines just waiting to tickle your taste buds in several hundred restaurants and cafés. If you’re a sports fan, Melbourne hosts international tournaments as well as grand prix events in various locations around the city.

Visiting the secluded islands in the Great Barrier Reef can provide a new and fresh look at nature’s beauty. While on your tour of Australia, be sure to take a peek at the Daintree Rainforest in tropical North Queensland. There you can see the rare sight of two World Heritage wonders nestled right against one another as the forest slopes dip into the Great Barrier Reef, with some sections of the reef growing almost to the shore itself. Following the same natural beauty guide you can opt to head into the expansive Outback and explore the treasures of the Kimberley, sometimes called Australia’s last frontier.

Taking Time to Relax

Beginning or ending your Australian tour at one of a multitude of resorts the country has to offer can ensure a relaxing evening or two is had with some of the most beautiful scenery. The resorts located well inside the Great Barrier Reef can cater to just about anyone – from newlyweds, to families or singles, or even sophisticates who demand the utmost in dining and beauty spas available.

Of course, Australia is surrounded by sea, so good swimming and surfing beaches are more rule than exception. Generally these beaches will be full of tourists, especially during the week. Still, it is easy to find your “spot” for the R&R that you demand and rightfully deserve.

If relaxing on your Australian tour calls for a cruise, that can be arranged too. Several options are available depending on your level of sailing skill and budget. For the couple that doesn’t want an entire boat to themselves, a catered cruise through the Whitesundays might be just the answer. These cruises usually run from five to seven days and can be had on modern racing yachts or older square-riggers with a multitude of sails billowing overhead. Passengers can usually opt to sleep in cabins on-board or set up camp on the beach at night. Either way you’re sure to be lulled to sleep by the gentle wash of the waves against the hull or shore.

A Tour for Learning

If the goal of your tour of Australia is knowledge, you should look into an Aboriginal-lead tour. Aboriginal guides are available at many places you can visit during your Australian tour, and during the course of your tour you will likely hear creation stories that have been handed down thousands of years. Guides are often accompanied by experienced translators, allowing them to speak their traditional language. The Aboriginal people vary depending on their location; the people of the islands and coasts having differing traditions then those of the expansive Outback.

While on an Aboriginal-guided tour of Australia you should be sure to try bush tucker by either taking one of the widely available tours focusing the food itself and its preparation, or stopping by an Aboriginal cultural festival. Bush tucker, as it’s now called, is the food that sustained Australia’s original people for thousands of years and has now gone mainstream as Australian chefs experiment with the unique recipes. All in all, there is so much to take in on an Australia tour that you could easily spend months there letting yourself get lost in the rich history and culture of this beautiful and historical land.
